The nuances of making gold items from your own gold

Melting of gold and silver products is a standard service of the workshop in Moscow.

First you need to decide why exactly you need remelting? If you want to subsequently order the production of jewelry, then the cost of melting will be included in the cost of production, that is, FREE !

You can find production prices here.

If you just want to melt the jewelry into an ingot, then the price will be calculated based on the contamination of the jewelry and the number of inserts. On average, the cost of melting 20 grams of gold into an ingot is 450 rubles , and melting silver is around 300 rubles .

Important - The truth about melting down!

Some clients believe that after melting down and then ordering jewelry for themselves, they will receive a new product made from the same metal that they gave! It is not true! If the workshop promises you that they will make it from your metal, then they are blatantly lying!

It is possible to make exactly from your metal during melting only when the work is done entirely by hand from wire. At the same time, there should be enough metal in reserve!

In all other cases, the metal is sent for refining and then new jewelry is cast from the purified material. Yes, exactly new, virgin, purified metal.

And we’ll repeat this again! If you need to melt down gold into a ring, or even melt down an old ring into a new ring, then 99% of the time you will have a piece made from brand new, purified metal.

Jewelry workshop - Moscow - melting and repair

The only way to make personalized jewelry is in a jewelry workshop . The ability to melt down your own gold and silver is a strong argument for ordering from us. Today, many companies sell luxury products, but people with taste prefer jewelry workshops in Moscow to brand stores. One of such organizations is “Jewelry Paradise”. We carry out all types of work in a short time - there is a choice of precious, semi-precious, and ornamental stones: rubies, diamonds, emeralds, sapphires and many others. We increase and decrease sizes, shorten chains, bracelets, insert dropped stones in your presence! The jewelry workshop provides a one-year guarantee for manufacturing and six months for repairs. We also accept orders for platinum products. We test jewelry in the Assay Office of the Russian Federation. All melting of gold and silver accepted by the population is cleaned at the refinery.

Work takes time

Different companies offer different lead times for making your gold items. The time frame depends not only on the complexity of the order, but also on the number of jewelry craftsmen. Therefore, some companies promise to cope with the task in two to three weeks, while others immediately admit that it takes them from a month to a month and a half to complete the application efficiently. Therefore, if you are planning to receive new gold jewelry for the holiday, then place your order in advance so as not to overpay for urgency.

However, if we are talking about an engagement ring that you want to make from your own gold, then the time frame may not be so long. Craftsmen admit that making an engagement ring is the easiest thing to do, since it usually has a laconic design. To make an engagement ring, the jeweler rolls out a block of gold, bends it and welds it with gold solder. Then he shapes it into a perfect circle and polishes it so that the engagement ring shines beautifully. The second manufacturing method allows you to create perfect, seamless rings. In this case, the master makes a wax model of the ring in advance, which adds value to the finished product. It is noteworthy that the jewelers themselves admit that such gold rings have no external differences. But many newlyweds, following superstitions, are happy to shell out twice as much money to ensure that their rings are seamless.

There are several ways to order a product made from your own gold. Firstly, the client can choose the design of the accessory from the catalog, which any craftsman or jewelry company must have. In some cases, they even have samples made from inexpensive metals. Then a person can carefully consider the options in the smallest detail and choose the most suitable one for himself. You can also bring your finished gold jewelry to jewelers so they can sketch the design and take all measurements. But even if you only have a photo from a glossy magazine, this option will also work. The master will draw a sketch and create a 3D visualization in a special computer program. Once the customer approves the submitted design, the jeweler will begin work.

Clients are always warned that if they want a copy of some model of a famous fashion house, they will still not receive an identical item. However, you can count on the fact that your gold new thing will be 85-90% a copy of the model you like.

What gold items will the new jewelry be made from?

Many private craftsmen or small jewelry companies work exclusively with the customer’s gold, since it is expensive for them to hold their own reserves of metal. But what kind of gold needs to be brought there for the jeweler to accept it 100%? A list of products accepted for work can be found on the websites of private companies or you can inquire about this directly from the master.

As a rule, the following gold items are accepted for melting down and subsequent production of new jewelry:

  • old pendants, rings, rings;
  • torn chains and mismatched earrings;
  • items with missing inserts;
  • dental crowns and denture discs;
  • gold bullion;
  • commemorative coins and their scrap;
  • gold plates.

An important note regarding dental crowns. Jewelers prefer to deal with these items of at least 750 standard. And dental prosthetic discs made of gold must be stamped with the trademark of the factory that manufactured them. A similar requirement applies to gold plates - their surface must also have a clearly visible imprint with information about the manufacturer.

Otherwise, jewelers do not have strict conditions. They are ready to accept products of different standards for work, but not lower than 500, since lower-quality gold contains more copper than the precious metal itself. The color of scrap submitted for remelting can be any color - yellow, white, red or pink.

At the same time, there is a clear list of gold items that no workshop will accept for making new jewelry from. The list of prohibited items includes the following:

  • gold in nuggets;
  • plates without names (imprints) of manufacturers;
  • items for laboratory or industrial purposes;
  • gold filings and shavings;
  • medals and orders.

When contacting a jeweler for services, be sure to check with him how much jewelry you need to hand over to create a particular product. The fact is that when making a new piece of jewelry you will definitely need a little more gold than it will ultimately contain in its finished form. The reason for this is the waste of the metal during its melting. Another small amount of gold becomes fine dust during the grinding and polishing of the cast jewelry.

On average, losses are about 10%. Moreover, the percentage increases when the item the client chooses to order is light in weight - the larger the item, the less gold will be lost during its manufacture.

Melting of gold and silver products

The melting of gold and silver products is carried out by a master jeweler in two ways - by 3D modeling (casting) or by hand. We make both masterpieces in a single copy and trendy accessories that are wildly popular among Moscow fashionistas. If necessary, we work from samples and sketches. Please note that we do not accept platinum for smelting. The melting of gold and silver in a jewelry workshop is offered through catalogs that illustrate previously produced jewelry. Feel free to ask questions by phone numbers listed in the CONTACTS section. Send letters with descriptions by email. We are located in a fairly convenient location for pedestrians and motorists in Moscow. From the Skhodnenskaya metro station, walk 10 minutes or by any transport towards Turistskaya Street - get off at the third stop.

Remelting procedure: features, cost

  • The cost of jewelry remelting services in Moscow in our workshop is calculated individually and depends on the level of complexity of the work. The price is affected by both the weight of the product and its complexity, the presence of inserts and stones, etc.
  • One of the services in demand today is custom melting of silver. Despite the fact that the latter has (compared to gold) a much lower cost, products made from it are very popular today, so such scrap is also worth turning over for smelting.
  • Making custom jewelry from melted down jewelry will cost much less because in this case you only pay for the labor.
  • It must be remembered that the mass of the precious metal decreases during the melting process, and on average such a loss can be up to 10%. Moreover, the losses will be greater, the smaller the weight of the product being melted down.

Jewelry fraud: how jewelry is replaced in repair shops

Jewelry repairs should only be trusted to trusted jewelers. Experts do not advise giving jewelry to unfamiliar craftsmen. During the repair process, they can not only damage the product, but also replace it. And if you don’t insure yourself in advance, it will be impossible to prove anything later. About fraudulent jewelers - in the “Panic Button” section on Vesti FM. How to avoid getting into trouble - says correspondent Anastasia Borisova.

The craftsman places two earrings with blue stones on the counter in front of me:

- Yours?

— I’m not sure that these are my earrings.

- No, you can check.

The story of the repair of these gold earrings has been going on for months. “Golden Key” is a small workshop in the arch of a residential building. Here they make duplicate keys, repair watches and mobile phones, and hem clothes. Here, as the sign says, they also repair jewelry. A month and a half has already passed since the day my earring with the broken bow ended up here. It all started quite standardly: they named the price and promised to do it in a week. A week later they called and asked to bring a second earring: supposedly the repair turned out to be more difficult than expected, and the second earring was needed for a sample. Of course, one could have been wary. But the arguments were quite weighty. Then for more than a month there was no news from the workshop; they said: “It’s not ready yet.” The mistake was made from the very beginning, explains the jeweler, vice-president of the Russian Union of Applied Artists Nikolai Balmasov . You should only take your jewelry for repairs to trusted places:

“Well, suppose you have a ring with a triple diamond that requires repair, will you really go to a regular repair shop and repair something there? You will only go to a jeweler you know. In this case, I simply recommend to you: only to a familiar jeweler or by recommendation.”

However, the jeweler’s advice, alas, is no longer relevant. The earrings ended up in an unverified workshop. And when the renovation was finally completed, they changed a little. Instead of neat clasps, two rough metal washers appeared on both earrings. At the repair shop, they foamed at the mouth and insisted that these were original products: after all, only one was repaired, but both look the same. In addition, they lay in the workshop for almost 1.5 months - you could completely forget what the earrings looked like originally. As they say, “during the journey the dog could grow up.”

A scandal, a complaint to Rospotrebnadzor - and 2 days later, in the same repair, two earrings were suddenly found, slightly more similar to those that were handed in for repair. The master makes an excuse, saying that his fellow jeweler simply got it wrong:

“It’s just that there are two sets, he mixed them up and brought another one. It turns out two sets - one was very crudely made, but it turns out that this is not yours. Well, that means this one.”

The earrings, of course, at first glance, look similar to the original ones. One problem - there is no jewelry mark anywhere on the product. The master puts on a magnifying glass, carefully examines them, spreads his hands and agrees with this argument:

— Is there a mark on the part where the stones are?

- There is nothing.

- But it was standing when I brought them to you.

It was simply impossible not to have a mark on the factory earrings, confirms Nikolai Balmasov . The current legislation obliges jewelry manufacturers to test:

“According to the current regulations, all jewelry must be hallmarked by the master and the hallmark of the Assay Office.”

However, in such a situation, it is almost impossible to prove that you are right, says the head of the Iskrina and Partners Bar Association, Yulia Iskrina . It was necessary to take care of collecting evidence for the court even at the time of handing over the jewelry for repairs, she explains:

“When handing over expensive products, you must, of course, have a certificate for it. And if you are afraid that there will be a substitution, accordingly, when handing over this piece of jewelry to the craftsman, it is necessary that he put his signature on a copy of this certificate, indicating that he is receiving exactly the product that will be repaired. Accordingly, if it later turns out that a replacement has occurred, the owner may ask to correct this defect. Accordingly, if the master does not do this voluntarily, they will sort it out in court.”

In addition to a certificate for the product with the signature of the master, you may also need photographs of your jewelry and the results of an independent examination that will confirm the fact of substitution. However, it is better, of course, to use the very first advice and have your jewelry repaired in trusted places.
