Where and how to buy precious metal coins?
Before investing in coins made of precious metals, it will be useful to find out the difference between investment coins and collectible and commemorative coins.
- Collectible and commemorative coins are issued in limited editions, so connoisseurs are sometimes willing to purchase them at a noticeably higher price than the value of the precious metal they contain.
- Investment coins have a significantly larger circulation. Their resale price is determined more by the price of the precious metal than by collector interest.
For the consumer, the difference between coins is not always relevant. However, according to the National Bank’s definition, almost all coins made of precious metals issued in Belarus are commemorative and collectible.
There is only one investment coin in the Republic of Belarus:
The “Slavyanka” coin has a face value of 50 rubles, is made of 999.9 fine gold, and weighs 7.78 grams.
“Slavyanka” is sold to individuals and legal entities for 831 rubles. 26 kopecks It is bought back by the National Bank for 688 rubles. 73 kopecks
There are already more than a hundred commemorative coins made of precious metals in Belarus. Here are some of them:
Name | Metal | Denomination | Sale price in the National Bank |
50th anniversary of the UN | gold | 1 | 481 rub. 85 kopecks |
M. Oginsky | gold | 10 | 81 rub. 00 kop. |
Gymnastics | gold | 50 | 481 rub. 85 kopecks |
Falcon-peregrine falcon | gold | 50 | 481 rub. 85 kopecks |
75th anniversary of the banking system | silver | 20 | 34 rub. 62 kop. |
Community of Belarus and Russia | silver | 20 | 37 rub. 42 kopecks |
Independence Day | silver | 20 | 37 rub. 42 kopecks |
80th anniversary of the financial system | silver | 20 | 37 rub. 42 kopecks |
100 years of the trade union movement in Belarus | silver | 20 | 37 rub. 42 kopecks |
Belarusian banks also sell collectible and commemorative coins of other countries. BPS-Sberbank offers an investment gold coin of the Russian Federation “St. George the Victorious” for 785 rubles. and buys it for 690 rubles.
The range of applications for coins is noticeably wider than for bars:
- coins are better for gifts;
- coins are in demand by numismatist collectors, incl. outside Belarus;
- coins can be legal tender in the Republic of Belarus.
The latter, however, is unlikely because The denomination of the coins is several times less than their selling price.
Purchasing investment and commemorative coins is the same as purchasing precious metal bars.
The National Bank buys back only its investment coins at a fixed price; the redemption does not apply to commemorative coins.
The situation with the further sale of coins is not clear - individuals are allowed to buy, sell and exchange “for the purposes of collecting and hoarding (accumulation).” Other operations will also fall under article of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus No. 223.
Is there a big difference between the selling and buying prices of bars and coins?
As for bullion, as of January 15, 2021, the following situation developed:
- The difference between the bank price of sale and repurchase of gold fluctuates around 11%-15%.
- 10 gr. silver The National Bank sells silver for 30 rubles. and buys it for 10 rubles. The closest rates are at BPS-Sberbank for bars of 250 grams: 771 rubles. and 543 rub. – 41%.
- Platinum also has a large spread. The National Bank sells 10 grams. platinum for 1,118 rub. and buys for 543 rubles. The most favorable rate for the same bullion: 940 rubles. and 535 rub. Belgazprombank has a difference of 1.7 times.
However, the scrap prices set by the state are noticeably lower:
- gold – 74.27 rubles. for 1 g. pure metal;
- silver – 0.88 rub.;
- platinum – 46.22 rub.
With coins it's even more complicated:
- the price of the precious metal in coins is higher than in bullion;
- banks do not offer repurchase of commemorative coins;
- coins can be sold as scrap for jewelry, which is less profitable;
- coins can be sold to collectors at the current market price, which may be noticeably higher than their purchase price from banks.
Selling prices for platinum, silver and gold in Belarus are determined by the National Bank and are not directly dependent on the corresponding prices on the world market.
The purchase price is also determined by the National Bank and is usually almost at the world level.
Commercial banks follow the National Bank in their exchange rate setting.
For example;
- price 1 g. gold in the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus on January 15, 2019 – 89 rubles.
- price 1 g. gold on the international spot market 01/15/2019 – 89.37 rubles. (converted from troy ounce to gram and from dollar to ruble).

How a piece of metal becomes a decoration
The workspace of the workshop has little in common with the rich decoration of jewelry stores and is somewhat similar to a pawnshop. The seriousness of the work is evidenced by the equipment, the price of which amounts to thousands of dollars.
One of the most modern installations is a 3D machine on which models of future jewelry are made.
— We create a 3D model on a computer in a specialized program, and the machine cuts out an accurate wax model of the product. It works like a printer, but the accuracy is many times greater - about 0.01 mm,” says Roman, a jeweler at one of the capital’s workshops.
One of the main methods of making jewelry is casting. For this purpose, jewelers have rubber molds in their arsenal. Inside there is a void, which is filled with melted wax, obtaining the desired shape of the decoration.
— Under pressure, the wax fills the mold. It cools down, the mold is poured into a metal flask with a gypsum-based molding mass, and after drying it is placed in an oven at 800 °C. The wax is melted out, and inside the plaster there remains a form that exactly repeats the details of the wax model. Then molten metal is poured into it. When it cools down, the flask is placed in water. Due to temperature differences, the gypsum mass cracks and breaks. If you don’t do this, it will be difficult to break the plaster and get the workpiece out,” explains Roman.
We notice salt near the stove. It turns out that she is here not only to eat, but also to work.
— There is borax and boric acid for cleaning metal during smelting. They take away all the dirt, absorbing it with a molten glassy mass. Table salt is needed for the same purposes. Sometimes it cleans the alloy even more effectively.
— Isn’t it suitable for cleaning home decorations?
- No. You can clean the products at home with toothpaste or a soapy solution with hot water. This does not give a full result, because small particles are an abrasive that scratches the surface. The best option is to bring your jewelry to a jeweler for polishing. In skillful hands, jewelry will become as good as new.
The interlocutor says that not everything can be done on a machine. For example, chains and rings with small parts require manual labor.
— To get round wire for chains, you need a die board with small holes every 0.02 mm. We push the wire through them and pull it out. The metal is soft, so the physical strength of one person is enough,” says the jeweler.
The master’s main workplace is, of course, behind the workbench. To demonstrate one of the most professional microscopes in the jewelry business, the master even removes its cover. But only for a couple of minutes.
— We protect it from dust and scratches, because the equipment is not cheap. Now in Belarus it costs 4.5 thousand dollars,” explains the interlocutor.
On the table there are compasses, rulers and many other tools. Away from them is a plaster - hand injuries are a common situation in jewelry.
The master also talks about the drill - the main tool for manual finishing. The installation has many attachments for different types of processing: one with sandpaper, another with a cutter (girls will definitely recognize it - this is what they use for hardware manicure).
- This is a black diamond. I don’t want to mention the price, but my hands were shaking for half a day after installing it in the ring. The client brought it for reduction, we took out the stone and returned it to him. By reducing the size, the fastening elements of the stone were restored. A man came with a stone, and we placed it in his presence. We guarantee safety when working with precious stones. If something happens, we have to buy them or refund the cost.
