What is the standard of 10 carat gold: table of sample ratios, composition and application, advantages and disadvantages

At all times, gold products had a high cost, which is why they served as a luxury item. But it is known that two different jewelry made from it can contain different amounts of pure aurum. To find out how much pure gold is contained in one product, just look at the stamped marking on the jewelry. The Russian buyer of jewelry is better versed in the metric system of precious metals, while abroad the authenticity of aurum is assessed in accordance with the karat system. Therefore, many buyers often wonder how to convert the standard into carats, for example, 10 carat gold - what standard.

What kind of sample is this

10 carat gold is equivalent to 417 purity. According to the general jewelry system, it is located between the 375th and 500th carats and between 9 and 12 carats. In the spool (existed in Russia until 1927) and lot samples (old German system) there are 40 spools, or 7 lots.

10 carats is a precious alloy of slightly below average quality. However, jewelers value it for its wear resistance and strength.

Types of gold samples

The sample reflects the percentage of gold in the composition. For example, in the 585th sample its amount is approximately 59%, the rest is various impurities: silver, copper, etc.

In Russia and the CIS, jewelry makers do not use 10-carat metal. Jewelry of other samples is traditionally presented in stores: 375, 585, 750, etc. The most famous are 585 and 750.

Is there gold without hallmark?

The legislation established that all gold products must be marked with an indication of the fineness. However, it is not always there.

This happens in several cases:

  • decoration is old;
  • it has been altered or restored;
  • made using artisanal methods;
  • brought from countries where trade in unmarked products is allowed: Italy, Spain, Turkey, etc.;
  • fake.

How to determine a sample

Sometimes low grade gold is passed off as higher quality work.

The jeweler will give you the exact answer, but some methods allow you to determine the quality of the jewelry at home:

  • low-quality metal attracts well, high-quality metal is weakly magnetized;
  • You can calculate the density of the material and establish the degree of proximity to the density of gold without impurities.

However, the easiest way is to pay attention to the mark on the product. The sample is indicated by numbers on it.

Composition and properties

Pure gold in an alloy marked 10 carats - 41%. The remaining 59% comes from other metals: copper, zinc, nickel or silver.

Metal has several features:

  • cost: it costs much less than gold of higher standards;
  • quality: cost does not mean low quality, the percentage of gold makes the products hard and durable;
  • color: 10 carats appear less yellow, but color may vary depending on the composition of impurities;
  • reliability: things made of 10 carat gold are less scratched, the alloy is reliable and durable.

Strength

Gold is a soft material. The higher the percentage of metal, the softer the jewelry. Such decoration will be scratched quickly and its wear resistance is low.

An alloy of 10 carats contains less metal, which means it is more durable. The jewelry is suitable for daily wear and is not easy to scratch. Many antique jewelry that has been preserved unchanged is just 10 carats.

Alloy shade chart

Gold marked “10k” is not only yellow. Jewelers use white, red and pink shades. All these colors are used for decorations. The shade depends on the country of origin. In Turkey, yellow jewelry predominates, in China - pink and white.

Hue/content Gold, % Silver,% Nickel, % Palladium, % Copper, % Zinc, %
White 41,6 21,5 10,1 16
Yellow 41,67 17,5 12,4 11,3
Pink/red 41,67 8 33,2

Brand

The sample must be indicated on the stamp. Its presence indicates the quality of the alloy.

Worldwide requirements regulate the location of the mark:

  • on chains and bracelets - with a clasp;
  • on the rings - on the inside;
  • on the watch – on the inside of the dial;
  • on earrings - on a bow or clasp.

Which countries love 10K?

The Americans love gold with the 10K mark most of all, because it is there that they produce it in record quantities. Products with this marking are most often worn by American women, and the shades of jewelry alloys can be the most amazing, even black.

In addition to the United States, residents of Canada and Great Britain, China and Turkey afford this kind of jewelry, although in these countries such a mark is not as popular as in America. The average cost of a 10K alloy ring inlaid with precious stones rarely exceeds $180.

Where can you buy or sell

Russian jewelers rarely use the 417th standard, so it is difficult to find it in regular jewelry stores. You should look for such products in a pawn shop, antique dealers and private craftsmen. Among them there are both rare products of the last century and new ones. A large selection of 10 carat metal is available among foreign sellers.

Selling metal is more difficult than buying. In Russia, 10 carats are little known and are not in great demand. Not every pawn shop accepts them. You can also look for buyers on sites selling things or among antique connoisseurs.

How much does 1 gram of gold of this standard cost today?

Cheaper than the 585th sample, and more expensive than the 375th. The metal is popular all over the world, and the price of each sample, including 10 carats, is gradually increasing over time.

A little about the metric system

Souvenirs and gifts made of gold are often brought from trips abroad, but in foreign jewelry stores, compatriots are faced with a different system for measuring gold purity - in carats. Everyone knows that in the territory of the former Soviet Union there was a metric system of measures, according to which the sample was designated by a three-digit number (583 or 375). This meant that in every thousand parts of the finished product there are 583 or 375 parts of gold itself.

Everything was simple and clear until citizens had the opportunity or even the need to purchase gold items in countries with other units of measures. For example, Britain, the United States and some other countries still use the English measurement system, and in Europe, which has switched to the metric system, jewelers also use graduations in carats.

A Russian or Kazakh buyer with little familiarity with English measures would have a very difficult time determining the purity of 10 carat gold earrings in a jewelry store somewhere in California or Wales, so he needs to learn more about these standards.

Recommendations for care, cleaning and storage

Gold itself does not require special care. However, due to the components included in its composition, stains, darkening or tarnishing may occur. This can be prevented with proper care.

Jewelry must be worn temporarily. Remove before cleaning the house or playing sports. Protect from sudden changes in temperature, direct sunlight, dust and falls.

To remove dirt from the surface, you need to rinse the product in a soapy solution. A few drops of ammonia will enhance the shine. Folk remedies like toothpaste and baking soda should be used with caution. Usually a soap solution is enough to remove dirt.

The product should be stored in a box, in a separate bag, so that harder metals do not scratch the surface.

What is a carat of a diamond

Diamond is one of the most expensive precious stones. This is a cut diamond. The name means "sparkling". To add shine and convey the play of color, jewelers make many edges on the nugget, rounding the corners or leaving them sharp.

In classic jewelry, the top of the mineral looks like this after cutting:

  • round;
  • square;
  • rectangular;
  • oval;
  • triangular.

The mass of a nugget is calculated in carats. The term comes from carato: the Italian name for the pod of the Ceratonia tree. The seeds of ceratonia fruits weigh 0.2 grams. This measure began to be used in antiquity, since there were no other ways to evaluate diamonds at that time.

The size of 1 carat diamonds differs according to the type of cut:

Cut typeNumber of facesWidth/length or diameterWeight
mm (mm)cm (cm)MilligramGram
Round57(classical)6.40.642000.2
Square49, 57, 725.550.555
Oval577.7/5.90.77 x 0.59
Pear-shaped (drop-shaped)55, 565.8/8.60.58 x 0.86
Heart-shaped57, 586.7/6.50.67 x 0.65
“Marquise” (oval with pointed ends on the narrow side)555.6/9.80.56 x 0.98
Emerald (rectangular)57, 656.4/4.90.64 x 0.49
Equilateral triangle19–526.5/6.50.65 x 0.65

Carat is important in determining value. The least valued are crumbs (dust) and small cut diamonds up to 0.3 mm. The sparkle in them is barely noticeable. Large (from 1 ct) or medium (0.3–0.999 ct) nuggets cost 15 times more than the same weight of small-caliber minerals. Their sparkling shine (brilliantation) is clearly expressed.

In 1907, the value of 1 ct was officially approved - 200 milligrams. The International Metric Committee has established that the size of a diamond and other precious stones is indicated in this unit of weight, and other gems are indicated in grams.

Tips for choosing gold jewelry

Jewelry stores amaze with their assortment, and it is difficult to make the right choice.

You need to know a few points so as not to make mistakes:

  • Jewelry cannot be exchanged or returned to the store. Buy them only if you are confident in your choice;
  • check the brand. Its presence indicates that the product is not a fake and is truly made of high-quality metal;
  • pay attention to the tag - this is the “passport” of the jewelry;
  • inspect the product carefully. Look at how the clasp is attached and how the stones are attached.

How to determine how many carats are in a diamond (with table)

According to the standard, small round minerals have 17 faces. On medium-sized nuggets, it is possible to cut out 19, 24, 49, 55–57 sides. On large stones, the “royal” or “majestic” cut looks more advantageous. The first option has 74, 86 facets, and the second – 102. The shape affects the severity of sparkle and the size of the diamond in the product.

Table of the dependence of the mass of large diamonds on diameter:

Round cut stone caratNugget size (mm)
2.0 carats8.2
3.0 carats9.4
4.0 carats10.4
5.0 carat11
6ct11.7
7ct12.5
10ct14.1
14ct15
20ct17.8
30ct20.36
33.0 carats21
100ct30.5

The exact weight is determined only by weighing. Calculation formulas, including Tavernier's rules, give an error of up to 10%. The tables indicate the values taking into account compliance with cutting standards. The size of a 1 carat diamond in mm is 6.4. Medium caliber stones have D - less than 6.39 mm and below - 0.99 ct. A processed diamond of 0.5 carats corresponds to a diameter of 5.15 mm and a weight of 100 mg, while a 3 ct nugget has a diameter of 9.44 mm.

Determining the carat value of diamonds using the table is convenient when evaluating jewelry. Because of the setting, it is impossible to know the true weight of the stone. For measurements, use a caliper with an electronic display or a ruler with a mark of tenths of a millimeter.

What determines the price of a 1 carat diamond?

The evaluation takes into account transparency, color purity, and cutting accuracy. Deviation of at least one parameter from the standard reduces the value of the nugget. The price is also affected by the size of the diamond. After processing, it can have 1.0–1.999 ct or another carat value.

You can buy uncut chips of various shapes up to 300 microns (0.3 mm) in size for 35 euro cents/1 piece. A small nugget weighing 0.29 ct costs up to 50 thousand rubles. The price of medium cut minerals (0.3–0.99 ct) is in the range of 27,000–350,000 rubles.

Large diamonds weighing ≥ 1.0 ct are sold for at least 280 thousand rubles.

How many carats is the largest diamond in the world?

The largest mineral weighs 545.67 ct. Due to the brownish-yellow color of the diamond and the 50th anniversary of the reign of the King of Thailand, it is called the "Golden Jubilee". It has a cushion shape with rounded edges. Master Gabi Tolkowsky (from the Tolkowsky dynasty of jewelers) called the cushion cut of the nugget a fiery rose. There are 143 edges in total: 64 at the bottom, 55 at the top, 24 at the waist. The work took more than 23 months.

The carat measure is used when valuing precious minerals. Carat is indicated in ct, size – in mm. Nuggets of different cuts are the same in mass, but differ in size.
